Why NFP?

I don't have a lot of time to blog this week because it is the very dreadful, test week. So if anyone is out there, prayers are always appreciated.

Since I don't have that much time I just wanted to post some info about NFP. In case you're wondering just what NFP is, why people (especially Catholics) use it, or how the hell it works, hopefully these links can help you out. :)

Lastly, a quote from the Genesis 38: 7-10:

"But Er, Judah’s firstborn, greatly offended the LORD; so the LORD took his life. Then Judah said to Onan, “Have intercourse with your brother’s wife, in fulfillment of your duty as brother-in-law, and thus preserve your brother’s line.” Onan, however, knew that the offspring would not be his; so whenever he had intercourse with his brother’s wife, he wasted his seed on the ground, to avoid giving offspring to his brother. What he did greatly offended the LORD, and the LORD took his life too."

Sidewalk Counseling

I was driving to the local Planned Parenthood this past weekend to pray and had a pretty gut wrenching revelation. It sounds quite simple and something that anyone else could notice, probably even my dog could have but I never had. So here it is: I realized that I don't go there very often. I know, heavy stuff, right?

I don't go there very often. When I do, I go, pray for 3-4 hours, and then head back to my car feeling like I could be canonized a saint right then. How fantastic am I that I would sacrifice my early Saturday mornings to practice my faith out loud and to stand up for life? I don't know when I began thinking so highly of myself for this, but it definitely sneaked up on me. At first, I refused to go; who am I to judge this poor, desolate women who is already making the hardest decision of her life? It's really easy to think that and then get stuck there for a long time. Once I got past that, is where the self-congratulating came in, probably in part that it had taken so much time to get myself to go there.

Ready, Set, Blog

I guess I should start with why I started this blog.

I got married about a year ago and in preparation for the wedding I had to go to NFP classes. Yes, I said "had to go" because at the time I was not a huge fan of NFP. Despite being a cradle Catholic, I still thought that NFP was the old fashioned rhythm method and by old-fashioned I, of course, meant ineffective. That simply wouldn't do for me. I was busy applying to medical school and couldn't even imagine using some archaic means of 'contraceptive' when I had so much else going on.
